Q:

Do you have any ideas on incentive programs for driver behaviors?

A:

There are many different approaches to incentive programs. After all, your organization is saving significant operation costs due to these driver behavior improvements. Beyond fuel savings, you have most likely found your fleet is operating more safely with less accidents, reduced breakdowns and unscheduled maintenance, and maybe even lower insurance costs.

One important factor is to focus on team results primarily.  This helps unify the team as “us” against “them” vs. “me” against “you” within a location. Here are just a few ideas that may fit into your organization:

  1. Food Celebration – Whether it’s a pizza party, an outdoor barbecue, or something else more fit for the size of your team, people love to celebrate a win with food!

  • MVP – If the team wants to recognize a single person that put them over the top, maybe that MVP earns a $25 gift card to a local restaurant or coffee shop.  An MVP is not always the top driver but sometimes a lower performing driver that made significant improvements in that period that scored the win for the team.
  1. Plaque or Trophy – Perhaps a traveling trophy or plaque that has that period's region engraved as “Team/Region/Location of the Quarter, Half, or Year" as determined by your organization.  Perhaps a duplicate plaque remains in place at corporate headquarters.

  • Depending on the time frame, maybe a gift for each team member would drive excitement; this might be a company shirt, gift card, or other form of recognition.
  1. Yearly Celebration – Again, this is up to your organization depending on the benefits you have reaped because of the improvements. Perhaps you recognize MPG leaders, Idle % leaders, and Safety leaders (either through actual accident/incident reduction results or KPI improvements). This could be by individual drivers, managers, or teams.

  • Company jacket with their name embroidered
  • Larger gift card or cash bonus
  • Business associated trip (i.e. to an annual meeting) to be recognized by top management

You get the idea. Not all incentives need to be in the form of cash. Many times the items they receive that they will not or cannot purchase themselves is a better reward, and recognition in front of their peers is always appreciated!
