Best Practices for IST Reduction

Q:

I look at my Elevate Scorecard and see a low grade on ISTs (Idle Shutdown Timers). I tell my team to fix this issue, but I’m not seeing much improvement. What have you seen that works for others?

A:

Engaged and committed customers who request Idealease Focus Coaching (a 4-8 week detailed report of a specific KPI) usually focus on 4 things:

1. Communicate to the entire team what IST’s are and the expectation of 0 occurrences, as there is not an acceptable reason to have any.

  1. An IST happens when the vehicle shuts itself off after the 5-minute Idle Shutdown Timer expires.
  2. The message is simple. Turn the truck off at the key when you get to your location.
  3. Be sure to praise the drivers who do not practice any of these habits, as well as those who make quick improvement.

2. Advise the top 5 to 7 offenders that you receive a weekly report reporting their habits and the improvement you expect.

  1. We provide a report that shows their weekly results so you can see improvement.

3. Educate your driver(s) if there is any confusion on what the IST is or when it is happening, and even share with them the detailed report.

4. View the detailed report yourself to make sure this is driver behavior and not distribution personnel behavior.

  1. This would be indicated by the time of day of the events at the distribution center.  Are the drivers on site?  Or is this a loading or warehouse personnel issue?
